Academic Senate (Senate) is established under the University of Wollongong Act 1989 and is the principal academic body of the University, having responsibility for advising the Council and the Vice-Chancellor on matters relating to teaching, scholarship, research and related activities in accordance with these terms of reference.

The Academic Senate is composed of the president, the provost, the deans of the various schools, various administrative officials of the University, representatives of graduate and undergraduate students, and delegates elected by the faculties of the various schools of the University.
